Originally an ahupua\'a (Hawaiian land division), the Honolulu Plantation Co. opened a plantation for sugar cane production at the end of the 19th century in Aiea real estate. Much of the Aiea shoreline is actually located on Pearl Harbor. The USS Vestal was run ashore in Aiea Bay to avoid sinking. The plantation was shut down after WWII and was then turned into a sugar refinery. The previous sugar cane fields became residential developments. In 1996, the refinery was closed by C&H Sugar, thus ending Aiea\'s sugar history. In 1998, the owners tore down the old refinery even amongst the protestations of local residents.
